India Ignites Bid for Power: The Battle for UNSC Seat Begins
India has officially launched its massive diplomatic campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028–2029 term!
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar kicked off the race at the UN Headquarters in New York, pitching India as the definitive voice of the Global South under the theme #India4UNSC: Peace, Planet, Progress.
But this isn’t going to be an easy walk. While India has already secured major early backing from powerhouse allies like the United States, Austria, Sri Lanka, and Fiji, a massive diplomatic showdown is brewing. Tajikistan has officially entered the race for the lone Asia-Pacific seat—and they have the solid backing of the 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Can India outmaneuver this 57-nation bloc and secure its return to the high table? Will this bid finally push the long-delayed, 1945-era UNSC reforms over the finish line?
