India’s Trade Offers Called “Best Ever” Despite Trump's Fresh Threats
Donald Trump's own trade representative, Jamieson Greer, can't stop praising further Delhi while he keeps threatening to impose further taxes on the country. Greer referred to India's most recent proposals as "the best offers we've ever received" this week and said that India is one of the most difficult negotiators the US has ever faced.
Tensions over tariffs have persisted for months. Trump has resurrected an aggressive "America First" trade strategy after taking office again in early 2025. He first imposed 25% reciprocal tariffs and then added a 25% penalty tax related to India's imports of Russian oil. By November, India's exports to the US had increased in spite of this pressure. In addition to increasing collaboration in the fields of agriculture, medicines, services, energy, and aviation, the current negotiations seek to lower tariffs to 17–18%. Even Trump is unable to overlook India's strong negotiation position.
