Dehradun: An interesting case recently raised in the consumer redressal forum in Uttarakhand, where a court ordered the international brand Levi's to pay a heavy compensation to the buyer for selling a defective pair of jeans.

Levi's To Pay Rs 32,000 to Consumer

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Nainital directed Levi Strauss India Pvt. Ltd. to pay ₹32,799 as compensation to a customer for selling a defective pair of jeans. The case, filed by Srishti Yadav, highlighted issues of colour bleeding, which caused damage to her belongings and skin irritation.

Yadav purchased the jeans, part of Levi’s Deepika Padukone Collection, from a store in Haldwani in July 2022. Marketed as a high-quality product, the jeans caused problems upon first use, with dye transferring onto her Michael Kors bag and skin. Despite raising complaints, Levi’s failed to provide a satisfactory answer, prompting Yadav to approach the consumer forum.

The consumer forum found Levi’s guilty of failing to warn customers about potential dye transfer issues. It ordered the company to refund ₹2,299 for the jeans, pay ₹15,500 for damages to the branded bag, ₹10,000 for mental agony, and ₹5,000 for litigation expenses. The ruling also emphasised that an international brand like Levi’s must prioritise consumer interests and address product defects responsibly.

This decision taken by the consumer forum shows the importance of consumer rights and accountability for global brands operating in India. The case sets example for International brands operating in India to ensure product quality and transparency in their dealings with customers.

The incident is not new, as companies often fail to address consumer grievances, resulting in paying heavy compensation. Recently an insurance company in Tamil Nadu was asked to pay compensation of ₹32 lakh with 9% interest to a consumer for denying a medical insurance claim.
