Big Breakthrough In US-Iran Talks: Trump Announces 'Enriched Uranium To Be Destroyed'

Tehran: President Donald Trump announced a major breakthrough in US-Iran talks on Monday, stating a deal has been reached for Iran’s enriched uranium to be destroyed, declaring big progress in the peace negotiations. Trump’s big update on one of the most fraught issues on the table, the future of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, came amidst high-stakes negotiations to end the West Asia conflict underway in Doha.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump said that the material, which he referred to as “Nuclear Dust!”, would either be immediately transferred to the United States for transport and destruction, or dismantled under international supervision in coordination with Iran. He noted that the process would occur under the observation of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) or its equivalent, indicating that the global oversight could form part of any agreement reached between Washington and Tehran.
His comments arrived as the Qatari mediators, Iranian officials and US negotiators pursue a framework that would deliver a ceasefire, restore maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, and restart discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme.
Washington’s Position Softens!
Donald Trump’s remarks are being read as important because they suggest a possible easing of Washington’s stance on the enriched uranium issue, which has long been regarded as one of the thorniest obstacles in the talks. The previous US positions had largely insisted that the material be removed entirely from Iranian territory.
Now, his latest comments open the door to the uranium being destroyed inside Iran through a monitored mechanism, a formula that aligns more closely with Tehran’s demands during the negotiations.
In a post on Truth Social, the US President wrote, “The enriched Uranium (nuclear dust!) will either be immediately turned over to the United States to be brought home and destroyed or, preferably, in conjunction and coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, destroyed in place or, at another acceptable location, with the Atomic Energy Commission, or its equivalent, being witness to this process and event. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Iran has repeatedly rejected proposals to send its nuclear material abroad, maintaining that any settlement must respect its sovereignty and civilian nuclear rights while delivering meaningful sanctions relief. The enriched uranium reserves have remained a central sticking point, with Washington calling for tighter controls and dismantling steps, and Tehran demanding assurances on its civilian nuclear work alongside economic concessions.
Diplomatic Efforts Intensify In Doha After Failed Pakistani Attempts
The discussions in Doha come as a fresh development amid efforts to de-escalate tensions across the region. Alongside the nuclear question, the mediators are making efforts to secure a ceasefire framework and ensure the safety of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for global energy supplies.
Meanwhile, Trump’s statement that destruction could occur “under the observation of the Atomic Energy Commission or its equivalent” has been interpreted as a nod to involving bodies such as the International Atomic Energy Agency, though no formal details have been confirmed.
In the meantime, the challenge for negotiators remained bridging the gap between Washington’s non-proliferation concerns and Iran’s insistence on retaining civilian nuclear capabilities without external control of its stockpiles.
