Cubans remembered their former president and top figure of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, on the sixth anniversary of his death on Friday.

Castro died on November 25, 2016, at the age of 90.

The celebration of Castro's legacy took place in ceremony at the University of Havana that was attended by students and a few members of the Communist Party leadership and old revolutionary comrades.

91-year old Raul Castro, who succeeded his brother until he stepped down in 2018, was expected but didn't attend the ceremony.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz Canel sent a message on his Twitter account from China where he is on a state visit.

The message said "no matter how far we are from #Cuba, we always feel very much alive the Commander in Chief. His revolutionary legacy is already a heritage of humanity. His ideas are not only alive. Everyday they acquire greater value and relevance."

Fidel Castro rode into Havana in January 1959 to become, at the age of 32, the youngest leader in Latin America.

For decades, he was a source of inspiration and support to revolutionaries from Latin America to Africa.

Castro embraced Soviet-style communism and defied the power of 10 US presidents during his half-century of rule in Cuba.
