Hamas Releases 'Farewell Picture' Of 48 Israeli Hostages Amid Intensified Israeli Assault
Hamas releases 'farewell picture' of 48 Israeli hostages amid Israel's intensified assault on Gaza City, warning captives' lives are at risk.
Gaza: Hamas has released a disturbing ‘farewell picture’ of 48 Israeli hostages being held in Gaza. Hamas' move comes as Israeli forces are stepping up their military operations in Gaza City, the largest urban area in the enclave, according to reports from Al Jazeera. The picture, released by Hamas's armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, shows images of both living and deceased captives.
The 'farewell picture', shared online on Saturday, displays images of both living and deceased captives, each captioned ‘Ron Arad’, a reference to the Israeli air force officer who went missing in Lebanon in 1986 after being captured by the Amal Movement and later handed over to Hezbollah. Notably, Ron Arad's fate remains unresolved at present.
The release of this ‘farewell’ image comes as Israeli forces intensify their assault on Gaza City. Accompanying the photo, Hamas issued a statement blaming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's refusal to negotiate and army chief Eyal Zamir's ‘capitulation’ for the possible demise of the captives as the military operation in Gaza City begins. "Because of Netanyahu's refusal, and Zamir's capitulation, a farewell picture as the military operation in Gaza City begins," the text read.
The Israeli officials estimated that at least 20 captives remain alive in Gaza, though US President Donald Trump has suggested the number could be lower. Both leaders have vowed to recover all captives, whether living or dead, and to destroy Hamas.
Hamas, however, has persistently warned that Israeli bombings and the ongoing ground offensive place the captives' lives at significant risk, alleging that some have already been killed by airstrikes. The group claims the captives are dispersed across various neighbourhoods in Gaza City.
The release of the ‘farewell’ image coincides with expected large-scale protests in Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities. The demonstrators are demanding a deal to secure the captives' return and to halt the war. Earlier this month, Hamas released footage of two Israeli captives, following a separate video showing two others in deteriorating condition, one of whom was depicted digging his own grave. These images drew sharp condemnation from the families of the captives, Israeli authorities, and international allies, including the United States.
The humanitarian toll of the conflict in Gaza is staggering. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza, since October 2023, Israeli strikes have killed at least 65,208 people and wounded 166,271. Following Israel's breach of a ceasefire on March 18, 12,653 Palestinians have been killed and 54,230 injured, as reported by Al Jazeera.
