Indian-Origin PhD Student In California Found Dead In Big Pine Lakes After Going Missing On Sierra Hike

California: An Indian-origin doctoral student, studying in the United States, has died after going missing during a solo hiking trip in California’s eastern Sierra Nevada. According to student publication Daily Nexus, the victim, identified as Vikram Mubayi, was a student at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). 

As per reports, Vikram Mubayi, who was pursuing a PhD in the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCSB, had travelled to the Big Pine Lakes area for a hike over the weekend. However, he failed to return as scheduled and could no longer be reached by his family. Following the unexpected disconnect, a search operation was launched by the local administration with the help of a dedicated search team.

During an intense search operation, the officials later recovered Vikram’s body from the Big Pine Lakes area on August 3. At this stage, the search team has not explained how he entered the water. The cops have also stated there is no sign of foul play at present, though the matter remains under investigation.

Search Launched After Family Lost Contact

Reports suggested that the search began after communication with Vikram Mubayi stopped during his hike. In a Reddit post shared by his sibling, the family stated that he last had a conversation with them at around 8.30 pm on August 1 while he was in the Big Pine Lakes area. During the call, he passed on his GPS coordinates before contact was lost.

As per the police, when the victim did not come back as planned, his family reported him missing to the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office. After the cops were informed about the student's disappearance, they launched a large-scale search involving Inyo County Search and Rescue (ICSR) volunteers. Amidst the efforts to locate the victim, the family shared details of his intended hiking route on social media, in the hope that someone who had encountered him might come forward.

The police have not provided further details about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Academic Work Focused On Sustainable Technologies

According to his UCSB profile, Vikram Mubayi was working towards a PhD in Chemical Engineering. He had completed a bachelor’s degree in the same subject at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2022.

His research at UCSB centred on sustainable technologies, and as listed on his LinkedIn profile, he was studying bacteria and biological processes that can break down plant waste and plastics. The aim of his work was to help develop environmentally friendly alternatives to petroleum-based materials.

During his time at UCSB, he also worked as a teaching assistant for both undergraduate and graduate chemical engineering courses.

Remembered As Outdoorsy And Experienced Hiker

As per reports, Vikram Mubayi was born and raised in Hong Kong. His friends and close ones called him a “fairly experienced hiker” and expressed shock over the incident. A self-written biography published by Illini 4000, a student-led non-profit organisation Vikram took part in during his undergraduate years, portrayed him as someone who loved sport and enjoyed spending time outdoors.

The loss has been felt across the university, where he was known both for his academic commitment to sustainability and for his enthusiasm for the outdoors. Further details regarding the incident are awaited.
