Why IndiGo Cancelled Flights Amid Iran Tensions? Check Routes Affected, Safety Advisory & Schedule Changes
IndiGo has cancelled and adjusted several international flights in response to developments around Iran, with services to and from Tbilisi, Almaty, Baku and Tashkent suspended until late February 2026. The airline says passenger and crew safety is its top priority as it reviews operations amid regional instability.
New Delhi: India’s largest carrier, IndiGo, has announced the extension of flight cancellations to several international destinations until February 28, 2026.
The decision comes as geopolitical tensions involving Iran continue to escalate, leading to significant disruptions in global aviation corridors.
The airline on Tuesday issued a travel advisory following developments in Iran and adjusted its flight schedule.
In a post on X, IndiGo noted that its flights to and from Tbilisi, Almaty, Baku, and Tashkent have been cancelled until February 28.
“Travel Advisory- In view of the developing situation around Iran, we have made additional adjustments to our flight schedule to ensure a safe and seamless experience for our customers and crew.”
Key Routes Affected
Because these routes traditionally overfly Iranian airspace, the airline has suspended services to these cities: Tbilisi, Georgia; Almaty, Kazakhstan; Tashkent, Uzbekistan; and Baku, Azerbaijan.
While the airline had previously suspended these routes until mid-February, the latest update extends the grounding through the end of the month.
Why Rerouting Isn't an Option
Unlike long-haul carriers that use wide-body aircraft, IndiGo operates these routes using its Airbus A320neo fleet.
While highly efficient, these narrow-body planes don't have the fuel capacity to perform the massive detours required to bypass Iranian airspace entirely. Standard flights to these regions typically take six to seven hours.
Diverting around the restricted zones would extend the flight time beyond the A320neo's operational range, making the routes technically and economically unviable for the low-cost carrier.
“Customers may visit the official website to explore alternative travel options or opt for a full refund, as preferred.”
"As the situation continues to evolve, our plans remain under regular review. Any further updates or changes will be shared through our communication channels. We appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued trust," the airlines said.
Safety Advisory and Global Context
IndiGo flights scheduled for January 25 from Delhi to Tbilisi and from Mumbai to Almaty, as well as the return flights, were cancelled.
These developments follow Trump's deployment of warships to the Middle East and his call for Tehran to resume nuclear negotiations, which were halted in June after attacks by Israel and the US on Iranian facilities.
On Sunday, Trump said the US was talking with Tehran, reiterating that "we have very big, powerful ships heading in that direction", while expressing hope for an agreement.
Khamenei maintained a firm stance, warning that any attack would trigger a "regional war".
The United States and the European Union continue to express concern over Iran's nuclear activities, which Tehran insists are for civilian purposes. (With ANI Inputs)
