Iraqi President Barham Salih met with U.S. Ambassador Matthew Tueller in Baghdad for talks on Thursday.

The pair discussed bilateral relations and the need to continue to combat terrorism, a statement issued by the Salih's media office said.

Tueller affirmed his country's commitment to supporting Iraq's security and stability, the statement added.

The meeting comes days after a barrage of rockets struck outside an airport near where U.S. forces are based in northern Iraq, leaving a coalition contractor dead.

More than a dozen rockets hit late Monday in areas between the civilian international airport in the city of Irbil in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish-run region and the nearby base hosting U.S. troops.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has pledged Washington's support for investigating the attack and holding accountable those who were responsible.
