Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said Wednesday that his government is closely watching the presidential elections of its key ally, the United States."The election is getting global attention, and the government of Japan is also closely watching the results and their consequences with keen interest," Kato said.

Kato declined to comment on early results and only said "we plan to congratulate a winner at the appropriate time."The result of the presidential election might not be known for days because of the large number of Americans who voted early.
