Prayers Pour in for Pope Francis as He Remains in Critical Condition After 'Mild Kidney Failure
Prayers have been offered worldwide for the pope's recovery. In his home country of Argentina, his well-wishers said: "Francis, the city prays for you."
The Vatican City: Prayers continue to pour in for Pope Francis as he remains critical after 'mild kidney' failure. The 88-year-old pontiff who is fighting double pneumonia and a complex lung infection, earlier showed signs of improvement, staying alert and responsive despite his condition. However, on Sunday, Vatican City said that Francis had not experienced any further respiratory crises since Saturday night, although he was still receiving high levels of supplemental oxygen.
As per the latest medical reports, the doctors said the "initial, mild, kidney failure," condition is under control. However, due to the complexity of his clinical situation, the prognosis remains cautious, with medical experts awaiting the effects of ongoing treatments.
In a show of solidarity, prayers have been offered worldwide for the pope's recovery. In his home country of Argentina, Catholics gathered at the Buenos Aires cathedral, while the city's iconic obelisk was illuminated with a message that read: "Francis, the city prays for you."
Meanwhile, wishes the American Jewish Committee also offered prayers. “We stand together with our Catholic brothers and sisters during this challenging time,” the group wrote on X.
As news of the pope's condition spreads, schoolchildren from across Rome have sent get-well cards to the Gemelli hospital, while Italian bishops led rosary prayers and Masses throughout the country.
The Main Threat Pope Francis is Dealing With is 'Sepsis'
According to doctors, Pope Francis's primary health concern is 'sepsis.' It is a severe blood infection that can arise as a complication of pneumonia. However, the Vatican's medical updates, including those from Sunday, have not mentioned any signs of sepsis as of now.
On Saturday, the Pope experienced a low platelet count, which remained stable but still low by Sunday. Platelets are blood cell fragments that play a critical role in blood clotting and wound healing. A low platelet count can stem from various factors, such as medication side effects or infections.
Additionally, Pope Francis developed anaemia and received blood transfusions on Saturday. He was also treated with hematin, a medication aimed at raising his haemoglobin levels, which helps blood carry oxygen more efficiently. Doctors reported on Sunday that the treatment was proving beneficial.
The Pope was admitted to the hospital on February 14 after a week of bronchitis worsened. Initially, doctors diagnosed a complex infection involving viral, bacterial, and fungal elements, followed by pneumonia in both lungs. He was prescribed complete rest, a combination of cortisone and antibiotics, and supplemental oxygen as needed.
