Serbia leader hopes for 'best' price for Russia gas

President Aleksandar Vucic said Sunday that he hopes Serbia will have the best price for gas from Russia amid surging prices that are putting great pressure on consumers.

"I am not ashamed to admit that we hope that Serbia will have the best (gas) price in Europe," Vucic said after the meeting with Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

During a news conference, the Serbian President said he had "a promise" from Lavrov and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov that they would talk to President Vladimir Putin about the gas deal.

Gas prices in Europe rose to a record of over 116 euros per megawatt hour ($134 per MWh) this week, more than six times the price at the start of the year.
