A passenger train derailed Sunday evening in Germany's Biberach district with about 100 passengers aboard.
Biberach: A passenger train derailment in southwestern Germany's Biberach district on Sunday evening resulted in the death of at least three passengers, according to preliminary reports. The deadly train accident also left several others seriously injured. The incident took place near Riedlingen, a town located around 158 km west of Munich, in a forested area. According to the reports, roughly 100 people were onboard the train when at least two carriages derailed at around 6.10 pm local time.
As per reports, the cause of the crash remains under investigation, with federal and local police investigating the incident to ascertain the factors that led to the derailment. Several photos from the scene showed parts of the train on its side, with rescuers climbing atop the carriages to assist those trapped inside. The rescue operation is underway at the train crash site.
Meanwhile, questions are being raised about the safety of Germany's rail network. Deutsche Bahn, Germany's main national railway operator, has yet to comment on the incident.
The emergency responders were photographed climbing on overturned train segments as rescue operations commenced. The German Federal Police indicated the extent of injuries remained unclear in the immediate aftermath.
Visual evidence from the scene showed multiple train compartments lying on their sides as first responders worked to secure the area and assist passengers. The derailment site's remote woodland location reportedly complicated initial rescue efforts.
The incident occurred at around 6.10 pm local time in a forested area near the French border, about 20 km from France.
As of the latest reports, investigators have not determined the cause of the derailment. The transportation officials and law enforcement are expected to conduct a full examination of the crash site in the coming hours.
