A motorist in Thailand has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly rammed a traffic police officer and drove at high speed for almost two kilometres (0.62 miles) with the officer still on the bonnet.

Wednesday's incident in the Tha Sala district of Nakhon Si Thammarat province, southern Thailand, was caught on surveillance video.

The footage showed Senior Sergeant-Major Montri Nitichai clinging on to the bonnet with his fingertips as the car drove right at a crossroad.

The officer eventually managed to leap clear when the car slowed down, around two kilometres down the road.

It was not immediately clear why the motorist drove into Montri, but the officer had originally approached the vehicle after it had nudged his stationary motorcycle.

Montri told the Associated Press on Friday that he wasn't scared during the high-speed ride but felt fearful afterward, when watching recordings.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, the driver involved in the incident will also face charges of hit-and-run and disobeying a police officer's order.
