Washington: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday read aloud a letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his speech to Congress, suggesting that negotiations for a Russia-Ukraine peace deal may be back on track. His remarks come just days after a tense Oval Office meeting with Zelenskyy ended without progress.

Zelenskyy Signals Willingness for Talks

Trump described the letter as “important,” saying it indicated that Ukraine is ready to return to the negotiating table. “We’ve had serious discussions with Russia and have received strong signals that they are ready for peace,” he told lawmakers. “Wouldn’t that be beautiful?”

His comments marked a shift from last week’s meeting, where he had warned Zelenskyy that a peace deal was “far, far, far away” unless Ukraine was willing to compromise.

Zelenskyy also posted on X, calling the recent events “regrettable” and reaffirming Ukraine’s commitment to peace.

“I would like to reiterate Ukraine’s commitment to peace. None of us wants an endless war. Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than Ukrainians. My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts,” he wrote on X.

Tense Relations After Oval Office Meeting

The letter follows a contentious discussion in the White House, where Trump reportedly pushed Zelenskyy to consider negotiations with Russia. Zelenskyy, however, has repeatedly insisted that any peace deal must not come at the cost of Ukraine’s sovereignty. The breakdown of talks last week had fueled speculation that US support for Kyiv could weaken under Trump’s leadership.  Political Reactions and Fallout

Trump’s statement received mixed reactions in Congress. While Republicans welcomed the idea of renewed peace efforts, Democrats were skeptical, with some accusing the President of undermining Ukraine’s position.

Key Points from Trump’s Joint Address to Congress

- Trump’s first joint address to Congress since taking office for a second time lasted 1 hour and 40 minutes.
- Democrat Al Green was ejected early on by the Republican Speaker after rising in protest and refusing to retake his seat.
- Trump criticized US immigration policies and called for strengthened law and order.
- He said he received a letter from Zelenskyy signaling Ukraine’s willingness to sign a mineral deal with the US to resume suspended military aid.
- He warned that the US economy will experience temporary disruption, which he described as “indigestion”, due to tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China.
- He claimed Greenland will become US territory*, saying his administration is working to “get it—one way or another.”
- A child cancer survivor in the audience was deputized as a Secret Service agent after Trump’s order.
- Democrats staged protests during the speech, holding signs with messages like "Musk Steals," "Protect Veterans," and “Save Medicaid.”
- Some Democrats walked out of the speech, including when Trump discussed Ukraine.

During the address, Democratic Rep. Al Green interrupted Trump, shouting, “You have no mandate to cut Medicaid!” before being removed from the chamber. Green later told reporters he stood by his actions, saying he wanted to ensure people knew “there are some who will stand up.”  Uncertain Path Forward

While Trump has repeatedly claimed he could negotiate an end to the war quickly, his approach to Ukraine has raised concerns in Washington and among US allies.
