Washington: US President Donald Trump announced a trade deal with the Philippines, which would open up the Southeast Asian nation's markets to American goods. Trump revealed that the Philippines would pay a 19% tariff on products exported to the US, marking a crucial step towards strengthening economic ties between the two nations.

According to President Donald Trump, the deal will see the US impose a 19% tariff rate on Philippine goods, down from the 20% tariff threatened earlier. In return, the Philippines will open its market to US goods with zero tariffs. The agreement comes as the two countries seek to strengthen their alliance amidst shifting geopolitics in the Indo-Pacific region.

During Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr's visit to the White House, Trump announced the broad terms of the agreement, explaining the importance of their military cooperation. "We're going to talk about trade today, and we are very close to finishing a trade deal, a big trade deal actually," the US President said ahead of their meeting. Marcos, who is the first Southeast Asian leader to hold talks with Donald Trump in his second term, expressed his country's commitment to an independent foreign policy while acknowledging the US as the Philippines' strongest partner.

The trade deal is seen as a huge step in enhancing economic cooperation between the two nations. The US had a deficit of nearly $5 billion with the Philippines in 2024 on bilateral goods trade of $23.5 billion. As per reports, with this agreement, the US is aiming to reduce its trade deficit and promote American exports.

The trade deal comes after Trump threatened to impose 20% tariffs on Philippine goods starting August 1 if an agreement wasn't reached.

Military Cooperation And Security

The US and the Philippines have a long-standing alliance, and their military cooperation is expected to deepen further. Marcos told Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that the assurance of mutual defence continues to be the cornerstone of that relationship. The two nations have been conducting joint exercises, and the US has been supporting the modernisation of the Philippines' armed forces.

China's growing assertiveness in the South China Sea has been a major concern for the Philippines and other Southeast Asian nations. The Chinese coast guard has repeatedly used water cannons to hit Filipino boats in the disputed waters. In response, the US has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting its allies in the region. Hegseth asserted that China poses a threat, and the US is reorienting toward deterring aggression by Communist China.

Trump Balancing Relations With China

Despite the growing tensions in the South China Sea, the US has endeavoured to keep communication open with Beijing. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met recently and agreed to explore areas of cooperation while managing differences. When asked about balancing relations with the US and China, Marcos said there was no need to balance because their foreign policy is an independent one. He stated that the Philippines' strongest partner has always been the US.

The US-Philippines trade deal and military cooperation have a huge impact in the region. As the two nations work together to promote economic and security interests, they are also navigating the dynamics of their relationships with China.
