US President Trump Evacuated After Gunshots Fired At White House Correspondents' Dinner; Shooter Apprehended
As per reports, the shots were fired at the press dinner which forced guests to hide under tables. Soon afterwards, tactical teams took position on the stage when the president was sitting and evacuated him along with the other leaders.
New Delhi: In a significant security breach on Saturday night, US President Donald Trump and several top-tier officials, including Vice President JD Vance, were abruptly evacuated from the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner following an unspecified threat.
As per AP reports, one law-enforcement official said a shooter opened fire and has been apprehended and no injuries were reported in the immediate aftermath
As hundreds of attendees scrambled for cover beneath their tables, Trump took cover amid the unspecified threat as Secret Service agents and security personnel swarmed the banquet hall at the Washington Hilton. According to the Associated Press, the chaotic scene was filled with urgent commands to "duck" and shouts of “Out of the way, sir!”
Among the 2,600 guests in attendance, many scrambled for safety while waitstaff retreated toward the front of the hall. Some in the crowd reported hearing what they believed to be five to eight shots fired.
Footage circulating from the event captured sudden, loud noises that forced the President, First Lady Melania Trump, and other senior officials to dive for cover. Reportedly, the evacuation was initiated specifically in response to "loud bangs" echoing through the venue.
Moments before security led her away, a CSPAN live feed captured Melania Trump appearing to react to something in the audience with a look of visible concern, as reported by Reuters.
More about WH dinner
The annual White House Correspondents' Dinner brings together journalists, government officials, and public figures. The event was underway when the incident occurred.
The incident occurred during President Trump's first time attending the dinner as President, following years of boycotts. The evening was already high-tension, with the President's attendance putting the "contentious relationship" between his administration and the press on full public display.
The WHCD, often referred to as "Nerd Prom," has seen security scares in the past, but an active shooter engagement inside the host hotel marks the most significant security breach in the event's 100-plus year history.
'Let The Show Go On'
Soon after the incident, US President took to Tru"Let the show go on," Trump said after a shooting threat disrupted the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington on Saturday night, praising law enforcement and confirming that the shooter had been apprehended.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote, "Quite an evening in DC Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we 'LET THE SHOW GO ON' but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement. They will make a decision shortly. Regardless of that decision, the evening will be much different than planned, and we'll just, plain, have to do it again."
Previous Assassination Attempts
On July 13, 2024, an assassination attempt was made on Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. While he was speaking, a gunman fired from a nearby rooftop, with one bullet grazing the President's right ear.
Though Trump was rushed to safety by the Secret Service, the attack tragically claimed the life of one spectator and left two others seriously wounded before the shooter was neutralized.
Only two months later, a second assassination attempt was made at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida. On September 15, 2024, Secret Service agents spotted an armed individual hiding in the bushes along the golf course perimeter.
The suspect was intercepted and apprehended before he could fire a shot, marking another high-stakes security crisis in a year defined by unprecedented threats against the former president.
