Tragedy in Italy: Two Indian Men Shot Dead Outside Gurdwara
A targeted shooting outside a Gurdwara in the province of Latina has left two Indian men dead, sending shockwaves through the diaspora. The victims, aged in their late 20s and early 30s, were attacked as they exited the gurudwara following morning prayers.
New Delhi: In a chilling incident that has sent shockwaves through the Indian diaspora in Europe, two indian men were shot down in Italy's Covo in Bergamo province on Friday.
According to reports, they were leaving a warehouse used as a place of worship during a Vaisakhi festival gathering, marking one of the most violent targeted attacks on the community in recent years.
The shooting occurred in the province of Latina, south of Rome, an area known for its significant population of Indian nationals, many of whom are employed in the region's vast agricultural sector.
The Attack
According to local Italian media reports, the two men had just stepped out of the Gurdwara premises following the morning Ardas when unidentified gunmen opened fire.
The attackers, who were reportedly waiting in a vehicle nearby, fired multiple rounds at close range before speeding away from the site.
Both victims sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the chest and head. Despite the rapid arrival of emergency medical services and a "Code Red" alert at the local hospital, both men were pronounced dead on arrival.
Community in Mourning
The identities of the deceased have not been officially released by the Italian Carabinieri, pending notification of their next of kin in India.
However, local community leaders have identified them as young men in their late 20s and early 30s who had been living and working in the Lazio region for several years.
Investigation and Motive
Italian authorities have launched a massive manhunt to apprehend the shooters. Forensic teams have cordoned off the area around the Gurdwara, collecting shell casings and scanning CCTV footage from surrounding buildings.
While the motive remains unclear, investigators are looking into multiple angles, such as examining if the victims were targeted due to their religious or ethnic identity.
Investigating potential links to "Agromafia" or exploitation issues prevalent in the local farming industry, checking if the victims had any ongoing disputes with individuals within or outside the community.
Diplomatic Response
The Indian Embassy in Rome has been alerted to the incident and is reportedly in constant touch with Italian law enforcement agencies.
Indian diplomats are expected to visit the site and meet with the grieving community members to ensure a swift and thorough investigation.
As news of the shooting reaches India, families of workers in Italy are calling for increased protection for the diaspora, who often work in isolated rural areas.
For now, a heavy police presence remains at Gurdwaras across the province to prevent any further escalation or retaliatory violence.
