UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calls for action to safeguard 'shared world'

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday called for a commitment to international cooperation and regional solidarity to fight the coronavirus pandemic, in an address to ASEAN leaders during their summit.

Speaking to the ASEAN leaders via video link, Guterres said that COVID-19, despite its immense impact, was also an opportunity for countries to work together.

He also encouraged ASEAN countries to take robust action to reverse climate change as he urged leaders to demonstrate political will, starting by putting an end to new coal infrastructure and invest more in green energy.

"I count on your leadership and your resolve for urgent action to safeguard our shared world," he said.
