US-Iran Ceasefire Day 5: Pakistan Brokered Top-level peace talks between the US and Iran concluded after 21 hours without an agreement, with Vice President Vance citing Iran's refusal to accept US terms as a major issue.

The US vice president stated that discussions with Iran covered various issues but did not lead to an agreement due to Iran’s unwillingness to accept terms. He emphasized attempts at flexibility and good faith efforts to reach a deal, which ultimately were unsuccessful.

JD Vance communicated frequently with Trump and others, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, emphasizing ongoing negotiations and collaboration with the team throughout a critical 21-hour period.

The Fars news agency says the path to a deal hinges on the US changing its “unreasonable demands” and that the Strait of Hormuz is one of several contentious issues yet to be resolved.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Israel's willingness for a lasting peace deal with Lebanon, contingent on dismantling Hezbollah's military. As negotiations are set to begin next week following cross-border conflicts, Netanyahu emphasized security guarantees.

Israel's Staggering Bill For War With Iran

Israel's Ministry of Finance has released its initial estimate of the cost of the Iran war, and the numbers are eye-opening. The country has spent NIS 22 billion ($7.25 billion) on defence and military costs, including equipment and mobilising over 100,000 reserve soldiers. Additionally, NIS 12 billion ($4 billion) has been allocated for damages incurred by businesses and individuals due to missiles and other war-related losses.

Furthermore, the ministry noted that some costs, including economic losses from the war's 40-day closure of airports and businesses, will only become apparent in the future. To put this into perspective, Israel spent an estimated NIS 14 billion ($4.7 billion) per month on its military during the height of the Gaza war, more than double its pre-October 2023 monthly budget. The financial toll of this war is massive, and it is unclear how Israel will recover from these losses.
