While some cities gain popularity for the number of travellers they bring in, King Edward Point on South Georgia Island does it differently. It is known as one of the most remote places on earth due to its freezing temperatures that only about 10 people can withstand.

According to The Mirror, King Edward Point is the smallest capital city in terms of population. It is located around 1,400km south-east of the Falkland Islands and serves as a permanent research station for British Antarctic Survey. The station is situated at the entrance to King Edward Cove and can only be visited by a boat.

In the winter, the station draws merely ten people as temperatures drop to -15C. Numbers are slightly higher during summer, when 20 to 40 people inhabit the region. Staffers of the British Antarctic Survey are employed on 17-month contracts while three Government Officers are mandated to live and work at the station on a rotational basis.

People who reside in King Edward Point perform different jobs for a living. One is a fisheries scientist, one is a station leader, one is a doctor, another is a zoological field assistant for seals and penguins, two are boating officers, and two are technicians. The key goal of the researchers is to offer scientific insight and assist Marine Protected areas.

Living in King Edward Point

The team, which has released a series of projects from Gentoo Penguin Tracking, endures harsh winters and snowfall. Each one of them takes turns to cook, clean and make bread with a three-course meal every Saturday night. The crew is also provided navigation training and emergency drills.

For leisure, the team takes part in skiing, half marathons, model yacht racing, hillwalking, movie nights, and the yearly Antarctic film festival. But living in an environment with rich flora and fauna comes with its own responsibilities. The researchers take "every care" to avoid contamination by scrubbing their footwear and inspecting their clothing before heading to the station.
