Tehran: Iran has set three conditions for allowing the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, state media reported.
According to Tasnim News Agency, which is associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the conditions of Iran are as follows:
- Ships must be only commercial, not military. Ships and cargo should not be related to hostile countries
- Ships must pass through the route designated by Iran
- Passage must be coordinated with IRGC
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said that ship traffic through the strait will take place along routes designated by Iran and in coordination with relevant Iranian authorities. He added, “Iran is the guardian of the Strait of Hormuz and will show no leniency in implementing measures necessary to protect its national interests and rights.”
This comes after Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Friday stated that the strait will remain completely open till the ceasefire in Lebanon.
In a public statement, he said, “In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage for all commercial vessels through Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open for the remaining period of ceasefire.”
Thereafter, United States President Donald Trump claimed in a post on Truth Social that Iran has agreed to “never” close the Strait of Hormuz again.
Immediately after this, Trump again issued a statement on social media, saying that the naval blockade will remain in full force. He wrote, “The Strait of Hormuz is completely open and ready for business and full passage, but the naval blockade will remain in full force and effect as it pertains to Iran, only, until such time as our transaction with Iran is 100% complete. This process should go very quickly in that most of the points are already negotiated."
Meanwhile, Iranian MP Mahmoud Nabavian claimed that “some” ships will now be allowed to cross the crucial maritime route upon “payment of tolls". In a post on X, the MP said, “With the retreat of the evil American regime and the acceptance of a ceasefire in Lebanon, some commercial ships will be allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz upon payment of tolls.”
He added, “The claim of a naval blockade by the vile yellow dog has been rendered a joke and a preemptive failure, following the passage of Iranian oil tankers in recent days.”
