Vehicle Scrappage in India: Scrapping vehicles is a process of removing old, unfit, or polluting vehicles from circulation and replacing those vehicles with new ones. Apply for vehicle scrappage in India, involves a systematic process, which is governed by the Vehicle Scrappage Policy.

Here is a complete guide on how one can easily navigate the application process for scrapping the vehicle. The general criteria for private vehicles is that all vehicles older than 20 years and commercial vehicles, which are older than 15 years must pass a fitness test. If they fail in the fitness test, they are considered as End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs).

We'll discuss the steps required to apply for vehicle scrappage in India. 

Step 1: Contact an authorised scrapping center

The first step is to locate a government-approved vehicle scrapping facility near your area. The data for these centers is also available on the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) website or the local RTO offices. 

Step 2: Prepare all the required documents 

Before going to the scrapping centers, gather all the essential documents required. It includes:

  • Original Registration Certificate (RC)
  • Permanent Account Number (PAN) card
  • Aadhar card or any other identity proof
  • Address proof

Step 3: Process of scrapping:

Once the documents are verified, the vehicle will be disassembled according to environmental regulations. Fluids and all hazardous materials will be safely removed before the vehicle is crushed.

Step 4: Receive a certificate of destruction

After scrapping and crushing the vehicle, a ‘Certificate of Destruction’ is received by the owner of the vehicle. This document is required for de-registering the vehicle at the Regional Transport Office (RTO).

Step 5: De-register vehicle

After taking the Certificate of Destruction to the local RTO of your area submit it to officially de-register your vehicle. This step of de-registration is necessary to avoid penalties for unregistered vehicles.

Step 6: Claiming of scrap value and additional benefits

The scrapping center will pay the agreed scrap value of the vehicle. It is typically done through cheque or direct transfer. With the scrappage certificate, there are benefits on the registration fees for new vehicles.
