New Delhi: The Indian automobile industry mourns the passing of Ratan Tata, a towering figure who played a significant role in elevating the sector to the global stage. Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) President Shailesh Chandra remarked, "Indian automobile industry is deeply saddened with the passing away of Shri Ratan Tata, a towering figure, who has played a stellar role in bringing the Indian auto industry to the global stage." He added that Tata was "a great humanist, visionary and leader" who championed innovations for a better tomorrow.

Tributes Pour In from Industry Leaders

Hero MotoCorp Executive Chairman Pawan Munjal expressed his sorrow, stating, "I am deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Ratan Tata. His unparalleled contributions as a visionary leader and ethical statesman have left an indelible mark on our nation." He emphasized that Tata's commitment to integrity and innovation transformed industries and uplifted communities.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Managing Director & CEO Masakazu Yoshimura acknowledged Tata's transformative contributions, stating, "As a global corporate luminary, Ratan Tata will forever be remembered for his transformative contribution towards modernisation of the Indian business landscape and deep compassion towards the betterment of society."

A Legacy of Purpose and Integrity

Mahindra Group Managing Director and CEO Anish Shah noted, "Deeply saddened by the passing of Ratan Tata. His vision transcended business, inspiring a generation to create with purpose and integrity." He pledged to honor Tata's legacy by building a better world.

Apollo Hospitals Joint Managing Director Sangita Reddy highlighted Tata's immense influence, quoting him, "If you want to walk fast, walk alone. But if you want to walk far, walk together." She reflected on her interactions with Tata, stating, "Every meeting left me deeply impressed by his wisdom and kindness."

Humiliation Turned to Triumph: The Tata-Ford Encounter

In a significant chapter of Tata's legacy, the Tata Indica faced challenges a year after its launch, prompting discussions with Ford Motors for a potential sale. The negotiations were marked by humiliation, as Ford officials questioned Tata's business decisions. Ratan Tata, who was deeply affected by the encounter, later turned the tables by acquiring Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) from Ford in 2008, leading to a remarkable turnaround for Tata Motors.

Pravin Kadle, a long-time Tata Group veteran, recounted the incident, stating, "This was in 1999, and come 2008, the same Ford's JLR was bought by us. Ford chairman Bill Ford thanked Tata, saying, 'You are doing us a big favour by buying JLR.'"

TVS Motor Co Chairman Emeritus Venu Srinivasan praised Tata for his commitment to the nation, stating, "Mr Tata was a truly remarkable business leader, the likes of whom nations get only once in a century."
