New Delhi: In a distressing incident, a 22-year-old student from IIT Delhi allegedly attempted to end his life by jumping in front of a Delhi Metro train on Sunday evening. The incident unfolded around 6:40 pm at the Tilak Nagar metro station.

Eyewitnesses reported that the young boy, standing on platform no 2, leaped before a Dwarka-bound train as it approached the station. Quick response from onlookers and metro staff ensured immediate assistance, and the injured student was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital.

The IIT student pursuing B.Tech degree 

The victim, a resident of a south Indian state, is pursuing a B.Tech degree at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, according to officials. The nature of the injuries sustained, particularly to the head, underscores the severity of the incident.

Authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suicide attempt, and counseling support may be provided to the student to address any underlying issues. 

The incident highlights the importance of mental health awareness and support systems within educational institutions, urging a collective effort to prioritize the well-being of students.

Recent incidents of student suicides 

Notably, in the month of September this year, a 21-year-old student of B.Tech final year at the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi died by suicide. According to the police, the student was on extension as he failed to clear some exams.

The Ambedkar Phule Periyar Student Circle (APPSC) in a statement said, “Another SC student was found dead in Vindyachal hostel at IIT-Delhi today.”

However, the IIT authorities could not be contacted for confirmation.

It was the second incident of suicide on IIT-Delhi campus in last two months. On July 10, a student named Ayush Ashna, who was pursuing B.Tech (Maths), passed away after a suicide bid.
