IIT Madras, through NPTEL, is launching seven new online courses on Sports Science, an emerging field in India. These courses, available free online, aim to bridge the gap between theory and practical applications, specifically tailored for the Indian and South Asian body structure and cultural aspects.

The first batch of these courses is scheduled to commence classes on February 19, 2023. Interested individuals can apply for these courses on the NPTEL website until this date. A promotional video showcasing these courses is accessible at the provided link.

NPTEL, initiated in 2003 by seven Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, introduces these courses as a significant contribution to India-centric sports needs. Prof. Andrew Thangaraj, the Coordinator at NPTEL, IIT Madras, emphasizes the relevance of these courses in meeting the burgeoning demand for skilled professionals in various sports domains across India.

These courses cater not only to students pursuing Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Sports Sciences, Physiotherapy, and Physical Education but also to enthusiasts interested in subjects like strengthening, fitness, conditioning, nutrition, and psychology.

Offered via the National MOOCs portal, SWAYAM, the courses culminate with an in-person, center-based, proctored final exam, requiring a nominal fee of Rs. 1,000/- per course. Designed for a diverse audience including coaches, athletes, trainers, physiotherapists, and nutritionists, the courses delve into critical areas such as biomechanics, injury prevention, sports psychology, strength training for the Indian physique, and cultural facets of sports.

Covering topics like exercise physiology, movement science, sports nutrition, injury prevention, training fundamentals, strength conditioning, and sports psychology, these courses provide both theoretical knowledge and practical insights for aspiring professionals in the field of sports science.

Participants can earn a Domain Certification in Sports Science by completing five Core courses and two Elective courses from the comprehensive list provided by NPTEL.
