With only a day left for the Lok Sabha polls to kickstart, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday filed his nomination in Amethi at District Collector office, accompanied by mother and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and brother-in-law Robert Vadra.
Ahead of filing the nominations, the Congress president undertook a 3-km road show from Munshiganj-Darpipur to Gauriganj.
Uttar Pradesh Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's husband Robert Vadra has been named as the star campaigner for the party in the elections.
He had stated that he would for the Congress party all over the country, after Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi files the nomination.
Before Amethi, Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination from Kerala's Wayanad on April 4, the second Lok Sabha seat from where he is contesting the elections.
Rahul Gandhi, who has been representing Uttar Pradesh's Amethi in Lok Sabha over 15 years, will face BJP leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani in the ensuing elections which is to be held on May 6. In 2014, Smriti Irani lost to Rahul Gandhi by just 1,07,923 votes - a 4:3 vote ratio.
Meanwhile, Smriti Irani had taken a jibe over Robert Vadra campaigning for Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi in Amethi and Raebareli respectively, warning the people to protect their lands wherever the brother-in-law of the Congress president would campaign.
"If Robert Vadra goes to campaign for Congress, please warn the people living there (where he campaigns) that they protect their lands, as a very famous person who is partial to land is coming there," she had said.
