New Delhi: In a strategic move with potential electoral ramifications, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wishes to field Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, sources told Republic Network on Wednesday.
This comes following a crucial meeting in Delhi where seat-sharing discussions took center stage.
Varanasi- BJP’s bastion
Varanasi, a bastion for the BJP since 1991 (except 2004), has consistently supported Prime Minister Modi in the Lok Sabha elections of 2014 and 2019, the latter with a resounding mandate exceeding 60 percent.
The historical significance of the seat, coupled with Narendra Modi's popularity, poses a formidable challenge for any contender.
The Congress, which previously held Varanasi for a decade starting in 1952, has only sporadically secured victories since then.
Despite the formidable odds, Mamata Banerjee's INDI bloc is seemingly gearing up for a high-stakes electoral battle in an attempt to unseat the Prime Minister from his stronghold.
As the political landscape evolves and alliances take shape, the potential face-off between Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Narendra Modi in Varanasi adds an intriguing dimension to the Lok Sabha elections 2024, with implications for the larger dynamics of Indian politics.
