New Delhi: The voting trends on Tuesday showed a massive surge of the opposition's INDI bloc at 230 seats, nearly double its current tally. The latest trends at 2 PM showed the BJP-led NDA getting 300 seats, much lower than its ‘400 Paar’ target.

The BJP alone stands at 240 seats, below the halfway mark, for the first time since it formed government in 2014. Combined with NDA partners, Prime Minister Narendra Modi may retain the office for the third term, but a lot will change with a boost to INDI.

It's not just a moral boost for the opposition alliance but will bring them a set of benefits, including a significantly larger presence as a pressure group in Parliament to counter the government on new Bills and resolutions.

Any tally above 200 for the INDI, and 100 for Congress will also bring them the status of Leader of Opposition and more chairpersonships of parliamentary panels that are responsible bodies to oversee and influence government works.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, amid massive boost for the INDI bloc, said that it's not a political defeat for the BJP but a moral defeat for the Prime Minister.

NDA's ‘400 Paar’ Target Fails

The failure to cross ‘400 seats’ will not only lower the morale of the ruling BJP-led NDA but present major roadblocks for the government to pass amendments to the Constitution that require at least a two-thirds majority in both Houses and support from a majority of states.

If the two-thirds target is also not met, it may impact BJP's vision of one nation, one election. According to experts, the implementation of one nation, one election plan would require constitutional changes to dissolve some state governments which are not even midway through their tenure.

On the other hand, if Congress maintains the latest trend of 100 seats, it will gain the position of Leader of Opposition which it hasn't had for the past decade. The opposition, which now heads just two parliamentary panels,  will get more chairman posts, allowing it to have more monitoring power over the government.

The Leader of the Opposition is the parliamentary chairperson of the largest political party in the Lok Sabha that is not in government (provided that said political party has at least 10% of the seats in the Lok Sabha). The post has been vacant since 26 May 2014, as no opposition party has 10% Seats.
