Rani Laxmibai or Jhansi Ki Rani, the queen of Jhansi was a warrior and one of the leading figures of the Rebellion during the period of 1857. She was also known as an icon during the freedom struggle against the British Raj for Indians. Today, as India celebrates her birth anniversary, take a look at the biopics made in her honour.

The Tiger and the Flame (1953), directed and produced by Sohrab Modi

Jhansi Ki Rani is a historical Hindi drama film which was produced and directed by Sohrab Modi. It is also known as the first Technicolor film made in India. The title role was played by the director’s wife Mehtab with him playing the role of her mentor. The film was later dubbed in English as The Tiger and the Flame and was released in 1956. Set in the 19th century, the film was all about the bravery of the legend Rani Laxmibai. Back then, it was one of the most expensive films made with a budget of ₹6 million.

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019), starring Kangana Ranaut as Rani Laxmibai

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi was a Hindi film starring Kangana Ranaut as Rani Laxmibai. The film was fictionally based on the life of Rani Laxmibai and directed by Kangana Ranaut and partly by Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi. The film was released in 50 countries worldwide and in different languages, Hindi, Tamil, and Telegu. It received positive responses from across the globe.

Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (2019), starring Anushka Shetty as Rani Laxmi Bai

Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy was a Telugu film directed by Surender Reddy. The film was based on the life of this Indian activist who fought for India’s independence. The cast of the film included Anushka Shetty and Chiranjeevi. The film was dubbed and released in Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, and Tamil.

The Warrior Queen of Jhansi (2019), a Hollywood film starring Devika Bhise

The Warrior Queen of Jhansi is a recent British period drama film which was released on November 15, 2019. The film is based on the 1857 Indian Rebellion against the British East India Company. The film was initially called Swords and Sceptres: The Rani of Jhansi and was co-written by Devika Bhise.
