Lisa Kudrow Recalls Her Struggles While Playing Phoebe In 'Friends'

Lisa Kudrow became a household name after her role as Phoebe Buffay in Friends. During a recent episode of Kevin Nealon's YouTube series Hiking With Kevin, Kudrow revealed the struggles she faced while playing the character. It's the 25th anniversary of the sitcom Friends that aired from 1994 to 2004. Kudrow recalled her career as Phoebe Buffay and the challenges she faced during the same.

Lisa Kudrow as 'Phoebe Buffay'

It was the early years of Kudrow's career, and she believes that playing a loveable and a free-spirited character wasn't easy. She also attributed one of her co-stars, Matt LeBlanc who played Joey Tribbiani for helping her fight the battles that came along the still-popular show. Before the NBC sitcom, she admitted playing characters of “dumb girls” which wasn't really who Kudrow was. Kudrow admitted feeling awful when she had to trick others in order to get through with the auditions, therefore it was hard work that helped her be Phoebe in Friends. To ace the character that seemed offbeat, like Phoebe, Kudrow was “struggling” even after the first three seasons were aired.

Things took a turn for better, according to Kudrow when LeBlanc came to rescue her with motivational talks. Kudrow talked about when she admitted to Leblanc that she doesn't “have it”, to play the character. However, Leblanc helped her fight the doubts that waved her mind and reminded her that she's already playing Phoebe for three years. LeBlanc said, “you're her, relax”. LeBlanc also pointed out that Kudrow was working too hard and that was her “problem” because Kudrow didn't need to stress so much. The actor now also admits that she thinks LeBlanc was right.

Kudrow has never watched 'Friends'

Fans were surprised to know that the 56-year old actor had still not watched the show. When Kudrow was asked about what she thinks about the first five seasons of the show, she says, “I haven't seen the show”. The American actor went on to say that she should watch it, as she hears from everyone that “it's good”. Kudrow has been awarded many times in the span of ten years she played Phoebe. The actor was nominated six times for an Emmy for playing outstanding supporting actress. She was also awarded an Emmy in 1998. Kudrow was also nominated for Golden Globe in 1996. Kudrow was honored with three more awards in 2000 and also received Satellite Award for Best Actress in a Television in 2001.
