The book tells the story through the lens of C Sankaran Nair who was a lawyer and nationalist and fought to expose the truth behind the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and hold the British accountable. Raghu Palat is the great-grandson of C Sankaran Nair and co-authored the book with his wife, Pushpa Palat.

As per the Bloomsbury publications, following the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919, the sole Indian member of the Viceroy's Executive Council, Chettur Sankaran Nair resigned in protest. His actions led to the removal of press censorship and the end of martial law in Punjab .

Sankaran Nair wrote about the ignorance and arrogance of Michael O’Dwyer, along with O’Dwyer’s support for Dyer’s actions, in his book Gandhi and Anarchy.

Michael O’Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab and a key figure behind the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, filed a defamation suit against Sankaran Nair for exposing the atrocities committed by the British in Punjab.
