Imtiaz Ali Finds Sara Ali Khan-Kartik Aaryan Blameless In Love Aaj Kal Failure, Says 'People Didn't Understand...'

Love Aaj Kal 2 starring Sara Ali Khan and Kartik Aaryan released on February 14, 2020. The film received negative reviews and couldn’t fare well at the box office. In a recent interaction, the director opened up about his mistakes on making the sequel.

During his appearance on the YouTube channel Game Changer, Imtiaz Ali said, “I could have done 2-3 things differently. I tried to put too much into it, and that’s why it became heavy. The ease of the film was compromised. It became thick, people don’t understand what happened. It seemed like this didn’t come from the heart. Secondly, I feel the film lacked freshness”.

When Imtiaz was asked if the sequel failed due to casting reason, he shared, “No, because of casting, but whatever you are making a sequel, you should have a proper reason to make it. I had that reason, but, I wasn’t able to express that. At least, it didn’t get expressed in the publicity of the film”.

The celebrated filmmaker also spoke about if he is ready to make anymore sequels and said that Love Aaj Kal 2 story was new, still the film didn’t work. So unless it is really unnecessary , I am not interested in making sequels. But, never say never, Rockstar 2 may be nice.

The film was made after the success of Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone’s 2009 film Love Aaj Kal was a box office success and was loved by netizens for the plot and performance of the cast.

When Imtiaz Ali had revealed on why he had retained the film’s name Love Aaj Kal

While interacting with media during the trailer launch of the movie, Imtiaz Ali had spoken about how he made two films with the same titled because the basis on which the earlier movie was made has changed. Ali also added that it is an opportunity for him to say the same story in a newer way. Imitiaz Ali also talked about how he will surely try to do this again in the future. 

Imitiaz also talked about how the definition and the dynamics of love have changed a lot in recent years. He talked about how relationships that happen in the current times are different than they used to be. According to him, things are fast-moving but the reasons why a girl and a boy come together hasn't changed. Imitiaz also shared that good storytelling is his topmost priority. He said that he comes from a place where his tastes are common and that he doesn't have to work towards it. 

For the unversed, Love Aaj Kal 2 was released in cinemas on the occasion of Valentine’s day in 2020. Apart from Kartik Aaryan and Saif Ali Khan, the film starred Randeep Hooda, Arushi Sharma, Siddharth Shaw, Simone Singh, Siddharth  Kak and Pranati Rai Prakash among others.
