Yash Chopra, who made his filmmaking debut in 1959 with the film Dhool Ka Phool, slowly became globally known as the King of Romance for his depiction of love in his films, like Kabhi Kabhie, Chandni, Lamhe among many others. However, not of all these romances were successful. One of those rare failures was the 1981 film Silsila.

Silsila failed at the boxoffice, Prem Rog didn't

Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha and Jaya Bachchan in lead roles, Silsila had created great buzz because of its casting coup. However, despite boasting of a very successful soundtrack which included like Dekha Ek Khwab, Ye Kahaan Aa Gaye and Rang Barse, Silsila could not cast its spell on the audience. The film failed at the box office, leaving Yash Chopra particularly feeling dejected about the rejection of his passion project.

Around the same time, Raj Kapoor’s Prem Rog released. One of the film’s songs titled Bhanwre Ne Khilaya Phool was co-incidentally shot in the same fields of Netherlands where Yash Chopra had one of the Silsila songs. Prem Rog, which released within months of Silsila, emerged as a hit film.

When Raj Kapoor walked upto Yash Chopra at a party

Later, there was a major Bollywood event which both Raj Kapoor and Yash Chopra were attending. However, Chopra was not particularly cheerful at the event. Noticing this, Raj Kapoor walked up to him and praised him for his song picturisation at Netherlands locales. He reportedly told Chopra, “I want to tell you one thing, everything else put aside, jis tarah tumhe essence capture kiya hai uss location ka, jo romance aap le aaye ho, I couldn't do that. (The way you have captured the essence of that location, the romance you have brought.. I just couldn’t do that.) You bought in a certain beauty of romance and poetry which I didn't manage.”

Understandably, this compliment from Raj Kapoor brought an instant smile on Yash Chopra’s face, and he left that event a much happier man.
