Actor Saif Ali Khan completes his 30 years in the film industry this year. It was only in 2001 when Saif Ali Khan acted in Farhan Akhtar’s debut Dil Chahta Hai, and won everyone’s appreciation as a confused, gullible lover boy Sameer. From that point onwards, there was no looking back for the actor who had struggled for almost a decade to establish his worth.
However, for the first many years, Saif Ali Khan had struggled to established himself as a bankable star or a credible actor, despite an occasional hit or two. Infact, the actor had faced roadblocks right from the beginning of his career.
Saif was slated for a joint launch-pad with Kajol
In a recent interview, Saif Ali Khan recalled how he was first supposed to make his debut with the 1992 film Bekhudi, which was also planned as a debut vehicle for Kajol. Veteran filmmaker Rahul Rawail who had launched actors like Kumar Gaurav, Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh in the past, was signed as the director.
However, a few days after the shoot, Rahul Rawail reportedly decided to drop Saif Ali Khan from the project, citing his attitude as ‘not professional enough.’ He signed another budding actor Kamal Sadanah instead.
Yash Chopra signed Saif for 2 movies
Saif Ali Khan’s mother and veteran actress Sharmila Tagore rang up the director and requested him to take Saif back, because such a setback could really be detrimental to her son’s career. However, Rahul Rawail did not retract from his decision. For the next few months, whatever other offers Saif had ‘were drying up.’
This is when Yash Chopra came to the young man’s rescue. The Kabhi Kabhie filmmaker not only decided to sign Saif Ali Khan for his upcoming multi-starrer Parampara, but also roped him in for another film under his banner titled Yeh Dillagi.
Sharmila Tagore recalled how Yash Chopra’s gesture helped shape Saif’s image for the better, and he was immediately offered many more films. Co-incidentally, his debut film turned out to be Aashiq Awara, a film Saif had signed months after coming onboard after Parampara and Yeh Dillagi.
Even though Parampara was a big box office failure, it was Yash Chopra indeed who helped Saif Ali Khan with the platform and confidence boost that he needed at that age.
