A PIL was filed in the Delhi High Court against Yo Yo Honey Singh's viral track Maniac for portraying women as “sexual objects” and using vulgar words. The court has asked the litigant to avail civil or criminal remedies under law. This has come after Neetu Chandra filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Patna High Court, complaining against alleged vulgarity in the song.
Last month, Yo Yo Honey Singh released a new track titled Maniac featuring Esha Gupta in the musical video from the album, Glory. It is a Punjabi song but also has Bhojpuri lyrics, which are sung by Ragini Vishwakarma and penned by Arjun Ajanabi. Soon after the video was released, it was trending high on all social media platforms.
This grabbed Neetu's attention, who filed a PIL citing the song's "overt s*xualization" and treating women as mere objects. She further alleged that the song uses "Bhojpuri language to normalise vulgarity" and throws "women's empowerment out of the window".
The line “Didiya Ke Devra Chadhal Bate Najari” is a Bhojpuri phrase which portrays a scenario where a woman feels uneasy because of her sister’s brother-in-law (devar) giving her an unwanted, suggestive look.
The line “Didiya Ke Devra Chadhavle Bate Najari, Choli Ke Chijuiya Chikhal Chahe Jabri” translates to “The sister’s brother-in-law has bad intentions and is persistently eyeing what’s hidden inside the blouse.” It describes a woman feeling uncomfortable with her brother-in-law’s inappropriate gaze.
The song has been presented by Gulshan Kumar & T-Series and is produced by Yo Yo Honey Singh. The lyrics were written by Leo Grewal. The Bhojpuri part is sung by Ragini Vishwakarma and penned by Arjun Ajanabi.
