Prateik Babbar has made headlines since his wedding. The Cobalt Blue actor married his longtime girlfriend, Priya Banerjee, on February 14, 2025. Fans noticed that he did not invite his father, Raj Babbar, or his step-siblings, Arya and Juhi Babbar, which led to spark controversy. Weeks later, Prateik addressed his family’s absence from the wedding and explained his decision to drop the Babbar surname. He now goes by the name Prateik Smita Patil. Prateik Babbar’s family controversy

Raj Babbar was married twice. He was first married to late actress Smita Patil and then got hitched to Nadira Zaheer. Arya Babbar and Juhi Babbar are his children from his second wife. Prateik Babbar is the son of Raj Babbar and the late actress Smita Patil. After his mother’s death, Prateik was raised by his maternal grandparents, which explains his complicated family dynamic.

In several media interviews, the actor has confessed that he shares a strained relationship with his father and alleged that he spent ‘most time’ with his ‘other family’.

Why Raj Babbar didn’t attend his son’s wedding?

The Babbar family controversy came to light in February 2025, following Prateik Babbar's wedding to Priya Banerjee. The absence of his father, Raj Babbar, and his step-siblings from the event led to a public and dramatic fallout, with family members openly expressing their hurt and disappointment.

In an interview with TOI, Prateik and Priya shared details about their intimate wedding. When asked about Prateik’s family dynamics, he chose not to elaborate, saying, “There will come a time when I will address the topic, but now is certainly not the time.” Priya, on the other hand, was more forthright. She said, “That family was never there. That person was never there in his life. So, I’m not sure why that question is coming up now.” She also remarked on the struggles of a child who loses their mother, adding that few people truly understand such experiences.

Earlier, Prateik’s elder brother, Aarya Babbar, shared his perspective in a conversation with film journalist Subhash K Jha. He acknowledged potential family issues that may have influenced Prateik’s decisions but expressed concern over their father’s absence from the wedding. Aarya said, “Somewhere we as a family must have failed him.” He also voiced his disappointment, stating, “Not inviting our Papa, his Papa (Raj Babbar), how can he do this? Papa is very, very hurt.”

His step-sister, Juuhi Babbar also claimed that Prateik was influenced by people around him and expressed her desire to avoid involvement in the situation.

Raj Babbar’s reaction to being excluded from the wedding also drew backlash. Addressing the rumours, Priya stated, “Everyone who mattered was there,” emphasising that no important family member was absent. Prateik was previously married to Sanya Sagar, but the couple divorced in 2023.
