Superhero movie discourse appears to be in a perpetual state of flux. Several directors have opened up on their opinions on the genre, the most remarkable being Martin Scorsese’s scathing comments about not considering these films cinema. Even James Gunn expressed his fatigue with the superhero genre. Adding to the list, Zack Snyder stated that he is pretty much done with the genre.

Zack Snyder admits feeling tired of superhero movies

In a conversation with The Atlantic, Snyder admitted feeling tired of the superhero genre. The filmmaker said, “I have the same fatigue,” he believes that comic book films are "a cul-de-sac" that are unable to tell self-contained stories. “No one thinks they're going to a one-off superhero movie."

Snyder’s cure for this fatigue seemed to be creating a new and original IP. He said, “The holy grail is some original IP that you create, that has resonance and is cool."

Despite the film's unimpressive reaction from reviewers and fans alike, Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire is, by all accounts, the director's attempt to offer a new IP to an oversaturated adventure-fantasy subgenre. Snyder has shown his dedication to the Rebel Moon IP by hinting at a director's cut of the movie and an already-released teaser for the follow-up. He also stated that comic books, video games, toys, merchandise, and a spin-off TV show would all be part of the franchise's growth outside of the movies.

Zack Snyder to direct next James Bond?

During the same interview, Snyder also expressed his interest in the James Bond universe. He said, “It’d be cool to see, like, 20-year-old James Bond. The humble roots that he comes from. Whatever trauma of youth that makes you be able to be James Bond. There has to be something there.”

Snyder is the recent one to comment on a potential James Bond 26 film, as the series waits for its next move after the release of No Time to Die in 2021.
