Oscars 2025: The 97th Academy Award is scheduled to be announced on March 2, 2025, to pay tributes to the film industry's legacy. Talk show host Conan O’Brien will make his debut as the host of Hollywood’s biggest awards night. This year, the Oscars have faced several tragic setbacks, starting with the death of Matthew Perry and the devastating LA wildfire. Adding to the heartbreak, five-time nominee and two-time Oscar winner Gene Hackman passed away at his home alongside his wife and dog. This sad news comes shortly after the passing news of Gossip Girl actress Michelle Trachtenberg, deepening the sense of mishaps while heading up to the ceremony.

LA Wildfire emerged two months before Oscar 2025

This year's Oscars will honour cinematic excellence and stand as a symbol of solidarity with Los Angeles as the city recovers from devastating wildfires. The Academy has emphasised that recognising the city's resilience will be a central theme of the event.

Massive wildfires tore through the Los Angeles area in January, displacing tens of thousands of residents and claiming at least 29 lives by 4 February. The Palisades fire, the first to ignite, consumed over 23,000 acres and devastated nearby communities. After four weeks, both the Palisades and Eaton fires have been fully contained, but they remain among California's deadliest and most destructive wildfires.

This January outbreak was an extreme anomaly, driven by unusually severe fire weather in Southern California. Investigating the various factors that contributed to the disaster will require time. Many celebrities, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Adam Brody, Paris Hilton, and Billy Crystal, lost their homes in the fires. The devastation also caused a delay in announcing Oscar nominations.

Oscars 2025 presenter suffered a personal tragedy months before the Academy night

Conan O’Brien, the late-night talk show host, will present the Oscars for the first time, just months after experiencing a personal loss.

The 61-year-old comedian lost both his parents within three days in December last year. His father, Dr Thomas O’Brien, passed away on 9 December at 95, followed by his 92-year-old mother, Ruth Reardon O’Brien, who died peacefully at her Massachusetts home on 12 December. Her obituary stated: "O’Brien, Ruth Reardon of Brookline passed away peacefully on December 12th, 2024, at age 92. Beloved wife of sixty-six years to Thomas Francis O’Brien, M.D., who passed away on December 9th, 2024."

Gossip Girl actress Michelle Trachtenberg passed away at 39

In another tragic incident, Michelle Trachtenberg, best known for her role in Gossip Girl, was found dead at her New York City Apartment on Wednesday, February 26, per AP. Police responded to a 911 call shortly after 8 AM in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen neighbourhood where officers found the actress “unconscious and unresponsive,” according to an NYPD statement. 

“The family requests privacy for their loss,” Trachtenberg’s representative, Gary Mantoosh, said in a statement Wednesday. It was reported that Tranchtenberg underwent a liver transplant recently and might have faced complications. Her death is believed to be from natural causes, but an autopsy is yet to be conducted.

Legendary actor Gene Hackman found dead at his residence

Just the day after, 2 times Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, his pianist wife Betsy Arakawa and their pet dog were found deceased in their Santa Fe, New Mexico home on Wednesday, February 27. 

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office officially confirmed the tragic news as they are investigating the matter. Further updates are yet to be available.

Matthew Perry was given 27 Ketamine shots in 3 days before death

Another shocking and saddening news about the F.R.I.E.N.D.S actor Matthew Perry has come to light. Perry, who passed away at 54 in October 2023, was reportedly given 27 doses of ketamine by “people who should have known much better.” This claim was made by Martin Estrada, who previously led the investigation into Perry’s death, as detailed in a recently released documentary about the actor and the criminal charges against five individuals.

Amid all these incidents, Oscars executive producer and showrunner Raj Kapoor shared his vision for keeping the awards uplifting. “But we’re not ones to rest on our laurels. We always want to push the envelope,” he stated. “We want people when they watch the Oscars to be inspired by the films but also be inspired by the broadcast and feel something like it’s a show that you can watch with your friends and your family and debate on who should have won and who is winning,” Kapoor added. “We want people to have all the feels when they watch the show.”

The 97th Oscars, set for 2 March 2025, promises an exciting lineup of musical performances and tributes to the film industry’s heritage. Hosted by Conan O’Brien, the ceremony will be broadcast live on ABC and streamed on Hulu at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.
