2023 has been a rather successful year in terms of the global box office. Though there have been hits and misses, this year there have been several films that have made their way on to the silver screen, which have been helmed by women directors. While Greta Gerwig's social-fantasy flick, Barbie, has held its prime spot in the headlines owing to its record-shattering trajectory, there have been several others film's which also deserve the spotlight in this regard.

Barbie


Greta Gerwig's Barbie went head to head with Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer in a double feature, on July 21. The film, which features Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken - along with an expansive star cast - carries heavy social messaging wrapped in comic exquisiteness.

Gerwig also became the first solo female director in the history of cinema to zoom into the billion dollar club.

The Marvels


The recently released The Marvels, has been directed by Nia DaCosta. In an essential reboot from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it features several pockets of superhero powers getting intertwined forcing them to work with each other to save the universe.

The film notably stars Brie Larson and Park Seo-Joon in the lead.

‘Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret’


Adapted from Judy Blume's book ‘Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret’, the film has been helmed by Kelly Fremon Craig. The protagonist in the film, Margaret - essayed by Kelly Fremon Craig - has a Jewish father and Christian mother, who them embarks on a journey of self-discovery with her grandmother as her guide.

Polite Society


Nilda Manzoor’s debut feature film, Polite Society, is an action comedy hilariously portraying an intricate plan to prevent an impending wedding against the backdrop of sisterly love.
