Kannada Actress Ranya Rao's First Photo In Custody Goes Viral After Arrest in Gold Smuggling Case

Kannada actress Ranya Rao was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for smuggling 14.8 kg gold worth ₹12 crore to India. Upon arriving from Dubai, she was detained at Bengaluru International Airport on Monday night. Soon after the arrest, Rao petitioned for a bail, which was heard on Thursday. The Economic Offences Court reserved its order for Friday. Amid this, the Maanikya actress' photo in custody has been accessed by Republic. The image shows dark patches under Rao's eyes.

Ranya has been remanded for custody till March 18. During the hearing, the advocate for DRI argued that they needed further custody of the actress to investigate how she violated the protocols and if she is linked to any gold smuggling gang. DRI further mentioned that Rao's 27 trips to Dubai this year raised the suspicions.

Ranya Rao's stepfather Ramachandra Rao, the Director General of Police (DGP) for the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation expressed his shock and shared that he received the information about the arrest through the media. He revealed that he never had a black mark on his career and reassured that he had no prior knowledge of his daughter's alleged illegal activities.

"I was shocked and devastated when such an incident came to my notice through the media. I was not aware of any of these things. Like any other father, I was also shocked. She is not living with us; she is living separately with her husband, and there must be some problem between them due to some family issues." He concluded by saying, "The law will do its job. There is no black mark on my career."

During questioning, the actress reportedly claimed that her trip to Dubai was for business purposes, though DRI alleged that her visit was linked to the smuggling of gold, per ANI report.
