Post Oscar snub, 2018 maker says only films with financial backing must be sent for Academy Awards
2018: Everyone Is A Hero director Jude Anthany Joseph reflected on the need for a film to have sturdy financial backing, as the cornerstone of the Oscars race.
The Tovino Thomas led Malayalam film 2018: Everyone is a Hero was gearing up for what could have been an expansive Oscars campaign - much like SS Rajamouli's Ram Charan and Jr NTR led RRR around this time last year. However, the film failed to make it to the Oscars shortlist under the Best International Feature category. Post his brief Oscars process experience, 2018 director Jude Anthany Joseph has an important reflection to share for all other filmmakers aspiring to make it to the Oscars.
Jude Anthany Joseph reflects on the importance of financial backing in the Oscars process
In an exclusive chat with Galatta Plus, Jude Anthany Joseph reflected on the crucial role of having a strong financial backing when it came to partaking in the exhaustive Oscars process. While the director described the short-lived experience as an enriching one, his primary takeaway from it was that only films that have a sturdy financial backing, realistically have a chance of making it ahead in the race to the Academy Award Win. Citing an example, the director explained how a single full-page ad costs around $15000 with the average requirement for the same being around 15 to 20 of the same.
He said, "Last year’s film, Chhello Show, was financed by Siddharth Roy Kapur, and he did well and got himself shortlisted in the 15 films. So, if we are sending a film with a financial background, that would be great. The Film Federation of India is supporting the films by giving them some money. But, I have seen other countries supporting their films there and they are not that rich countries but they are doing better than us. So, I was thinking next time we should support more."
Jude Anthany Joseph says Chhello Show director Pan Nalin was of great help to him
The process being an exhaustive one, Joseph as adamant about coming up with a comprehensive checklist for the next Indian director that makes it to the Oscars race. He himself had been helped by Chhello Show director Pan Nalin who had shared his reflections about the experience with Joseph.
He said, "I would make a checklist for the next year’s guy, saying you have to do this. Pan Nalin helped me a lot. I called him and talked to him for one and a half hours and he guided me about things which he said he came to know only after the Oscars campaign."
