Unni Mukundan’s Marco released in cinemas on December 20, 2024 and broke several records. However, this actioner has sparked debate in the Malayalam film industry and has been accused of showcasing violence. But, actors Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran have defended the movie and argued that it is justified and acceptable based on the storyline.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Mohanlal said, “It is not the violence. It’s the situation. If the situation demands that kind of violence, it’s fine. But, you have to justify it. His L2 Empuraan co-star and director Prithviraj Sukumaran supported him and said, “I disagree with people having a problem with films like Marco because it never pretended to be anything else. From the first announcement, they clearly said that audiences would witness never-before violence. They called it a slasher film on steroids, repeatedly emphasising its brutality. So, if you go in knowing that and still complain, that’s on you”.

Recently, the Regional Officer of CBFC had reportedly appealed to the committee that Marco should be blocked on OTT platforms. According to report in Manorama, Nadeem Thufali, the Regional Officer of CBFC stated, “Marco has already been certified A. But, parts should be cautious while allowing their children to watch such films. The role is limited to certification and does not involve censorship. We have rejected the satellite rights for the movie Marco as it’s not suitable for a family audience.”

The critically acclaimed Malayalam blockbuster Marco is available to watch on SonyLIV and Amazon Prime Video. It began streaming from February 14.
