Orry Vaishno Devi Drinking Controversy: Orhan Awatramani is facing legal trouble after the hotel where he stayed during his time in Katra filed a police complaint against him and his friends for consuming alcohol. Katra is the base camp of Vaishno Devi and both non-veg and alcohol are prohibited in the area. It's been a day since Jammu and Kashmir Police booked 8 individuals under BNS Section 223, and many developments have come to light. Here's what we know so far in the on-going controversy surrounding popular influencer Orry.
Last week, Orry shared a video on his Instagram Story that shows him enjoying with his friends in Katra. The clip showed two bottles of alcohol, half-filled whisky glasses and food spread on the table. Towards the end, Orry can be seen showing off his phone cover. In no time, the video went viral on the internet with netizens lashing out at Orry for disrespecting Hindu sentiments.
Unhappy netizens urged the authorities to take strict action against the offenders. A user wrote, "Mata Vaishno Devi, a revered pilgrimage site, is NOT a Party Destination. This Bollywood Joker #Orry & friends drinking there is a direct insult to the Hindu faith. I urge J&K Govt CM @OmarAbdullah @JmuKmrPolice to take action against the hotel for this disgrace to Maa Vaishno Devi. Video Source Instagram. @Sunil_SharmaBJP @HMOIndia." Another wrote, "HOLY SHRINE AREN'T PARTY ZONES! Bollywood's #Orry &friends drinking alcohol & asking for an egg at #ShriMataVaishnoDevi Katra, where even onion & garlic aren't allowed! Is an insult to Hindu faith! Demand action against #Orry & hotels serving alcohol @PoliceReasi"
An FIR was lodged at Katra Police Station against Orhan Awatramani (Orry), Darshan Singh, Parth Raina, Ritick Singh, Rashi Dutta, Rakshita Bhogal, Shagun Kohli, and Anastasila Arzamaskina for violating the District Magistrate’s (DM) order and hurting religious sentiments. They have been booked under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The police told news agency ANI that notice to each individual will be sent in a day or two.
Republic Media Network has learnt that the administration of Marriott Resort & Spa is seemingly involved in the controversy. FIR filed by the Jammu and Kashmir police suggests that the hotel authorities deliberately delayed filing the police complaint. Orry consumed alcohol on their premises on March 15. However, they brought the matter to police attention only on March 16. This gave Orry and his friends time to move out of Jammu and Kashmir. The police officials told PTI, “Sensing the gravity of the matter, instructions were issued by Senior Superintendent of Police, Reasi, Paramvir Singh to nab the miscreants and set an example of zero tolerance of any such act at a religious place which can hurt the sentiments of people.”
Republic Media Network confronted the IT Manager at the Marriott Hotel in Katra. However, the manager refused to answer any questions related to Orry's drinking case and insisted that the General manager would answer all queries.
A mother of one, Rashi Dutta, has been named as one of the accused in Orry's liquor controversy case. Speaking to Republic Media Network, she refused all allegations against her. She said, “We were just clicking pictures with a celebrity. I have a one-year-old son, I thought I could get a picture of him with the celebrities. I am a hardcore vegetarian, I am breastfeeding." Talking about the purpose of her visit she said, “My husband was invited by his client for some business discussion when we came to know that some celebrity has come. Then I thought to click a picture. In the viral photo also we can be seen waiting to get our photo clicked." Refusing all allegations against her, Rashi said, “People do not know the facts. Just because we are in the photo, does not mean we were involved. I was there, but not with Orry and his friends. I have no idea what was happening there.”
On Tuesday, it was reported that Jammu and Kashmir police tried to reach out to Orry and Cherry but after a few unanswered calls, their phones switched off.
Section 223 of BNS addresses disobedience to orders duly promulgated by a public servant, punishing individuals who, knowing such an order, disobey it, causing or tending to cause harm or risk of harm to others or a riot or affray. The punishment depends on the consequences of the disobedience. However, note that the offence under Section 223 is available.
According to sources from Republic, the hotel where he was staying was seemingly the Marriott Resort and Spa. The cottages are located in the dense pine forest of Katra with a view of the Vaishno Devi shrine. The resort features standalone cottage rooms and suites, two ballrooms, a viewing deck, a spa, an outdoor pool, and a 24/7 gym.
