This 1966 #HindustanAmbassador comes courtesy of @osians_auction_house, who’ll be auctioning it on Feb. 27. I usually don’t delve into auctions too deeply here, but Osian’s auction is different - it’s one of the first proper catalogued auctions in #India, though there have been smaller-scale auctions before. Best of all, it features a selection of highly-prized Indian-built classics including a pair of 1960s #Hindustan Ambassadors - the “Amby” effectively being India’s national car for decades. - Enthusiasts in India are serious diehards; in part because importation of classic vehicles (and often parts) has historically been very expensive - post-1950 used cars imported to India face a 125% base tariff (in total more like 180%) and so did pre-’50 cars until 2013. As a result, Indian classics are often meticulously maintained, but the hobby has a hard time expanding. Events like Osian’s are in part about making classics a more mainstream pastime. - The tariffs are a legacy of the 1950s, when Government policy dictated local assembly; which resulted in three domestic manufacturers producing nearly all of the cars in India. Premier, founded in 1941 with a license agreement for building Chryslers and later Fiats, Standard, a JV with Standard-Triumph, founded 1948; and Hindustan, founded in 1941. Hindustan built several licensed Morrises until, in 1957, it launched the #Ambassador - a lightly reworked version of the Morris Oxford Series III, itself an update of the previous Hindustan product, the Landmaster (an SII Oxford). - The Ambassador served India from mid-1957 until it was finally discontinued in 2014 with periodic updates - like a switch to the OHV B-series 1.5L four in 1959 (previously a sidevalve four) and various component updates. Market liberalisation in the 90s eventually spelled more modern competitors, and the Amby added a pair of modern Isuzu engines at that time. The car was a workhorse - a capacious and comfy, if slow, and omnipresent in India. - This green '66 Ambassador is a Mk 2, lovingly restored by former owner S. Taneja in Dehli and now owned by a collector of pre-war cars. To find out more about the Osian’s event go to bit.ly/2TYcxF8.
