No Skimpy Clothes Or Bold Choreography, Shefali Jariwala Revealed What Made Kaanta Laga 'Controversial': This Girl Who Is Reading A P**n Magazine...

Shefali Jariwala, best known for featuring in the popular single Kaanta Laga passed away Friday night. She was 42. Shefali was rushed to Bellevue Multispeciality Hospital in suburban Mumbai by her husband, actor Parag Tyagi. “She was brought to the hospital around 11:15 pm. The on-duty doctor declared her dead on arrival,” a hospital source said.

Shefali's music video Kaanta Laga made her a viral sensation. She also featured in a version of the song in Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra starrer Mujhse Shaadi Karoge (2004). The track was a remix of an old Lata Mangeshkar song from the 1972 movie Samadhi and in ways kick-started the remix trend. Speaking about the popularity of the song, Shefali shared that the song became a hit not due to her skimpy clothing or the titillating choreography, but due to the "bold attitude of the girl".

"Muje ek chiz batao. Upar se lekar niche tak main dhaki thi. If you see it actually, there was nothing there... The problem was the attitude of this girl. It was not like I was showing b**bs or bum. But then, I come from a very conservative Gujarati family. My father used to decide my clothes. Kyun itna ucha, nicha. Isko thik karo... usko thik karo... I think uss daur ke jo gaane aa rahe the, I was the most covered girl. It was the attitude of the girl that was bold. There is this girl who is reading a porn magazine. Jisko night club jaana hai apne boyfriend se ladke. The concept was bold and the attitude of the girl was rebellious. That was what was hot. Not the clothes," Shefali shared while appearing on Paras Chhabra's podcast.

Indeed, Kaanta Laga was not a controversial track. However, it did emphasise on the freedom of women to dress carefree and dance the night away, despite restrictions. It was surely a break away from perceived image of a traditional woman and heralded a new era of confident and stylish women, in touch with her sexuality. A “baddie” in every sense of the word.
