Coimbatore: Allegedly told to leave her pet dog, woman commits suicide

A young woman committed suicide at her residence on Friday in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu after she was allegedly asked by neighbours to abandon her pet dog.

A young woman committed suicide at her residence on Friday in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu after she was allegedly asked by neighbours to abandon her pet dog. 24-year-old Kavitha was working as a document writer in a private firm in Periyanaikenpalayam. She was taking care of her pet dog Caesar for the past two years.

As there was heavy rain, accompanied by a thunderstorm on the night of Wednesday, Caeser was barking continuously out of fear. The barking irked neighbours and they complained about the barking to Kavitha's father. The next day, Kavitha's father scolded her and asked her to leave the dog in some other area.

Upset over being told by her father to get rid of her pet dog, Kavitha committed suicide by hanging from a fan in her room late on Thursday evening, police said. Police rushed to the spot and recovered the body soon after they were informed. They sent Kavitha's body for a postmortem. Police have registered a case in this regard and further investigation is underway.

During the investigation, Police recovered a suicide letter written by her. Through the letter, she asked her parents, grandmother, and brother to look after her dog, "as all should live peacefully". Apologising for her act, she also asked them to visit the temple every week, police said.

Another incident

An animal welfare Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Andhra Pradesh has filed a case against panchayat officials of Kanteru Village in Guntur district alleging that they have poisoned 300 stray dogs in the last 20 days. According to reports, the complaint was filed in the Tadikonda Mandal police station. The police have registered an FIR and filed a case under the cruelty to animals act, stated reports. 

According to the Tadikonda Sub Inspector, Rajasekhar, the NGO 'Help For Animals Society' filed a complaint on Wednesday evening. Further, they named  Kanteru Village Secretary Ramesh and a private person Koteswar Rao for the alleged poisoning of dogs in the district over the last 20 days. He further mentioned that the police are visiting the village on Thursday. Along with it, they will send the dead bodies of the stray dogs for post mortem to find if they were poisoned.
