BJP MLA from Madhya Pradesh's Indore Akash Vijayvargiya has been granted bail by Bhopal's Special Court. He was arrested from the city on June 26 for thrashing a Municipal Corporation officer with a cricket bat.
The Indore sessions court had refused to hear the bail plea on Thursday and transferred the case to Bhopal's Special Court.
It had declined bail after the lawyer representing the local civic body opposed it. Following that it ordered that the Bhopal's Special Court take up the case as it hears cases related to local representatives.
On Wednesday, the MLA was caught going after the civic official with a bat and thrashing him. He also hurled abuses at him. The civic officials were in the district to bring down an illegal structure when Akash entered the scene and began the assault. When the police, who initially kept mum, intervened, Akash continued to assault the civic official, and even others joined in.
Following the incident, he said to Republic TV, "Indore Municipal Corporation is behaving like gundas, they are in tie-up with Congress leaders. I am a leader chosen by the people. I will not back off from the attack. I have been voted by the people to serve them. I will do whatever it takes even if it means lifting a bat and stopping officials. I stand by my actions."
A case has been registered against him and others involved under the sections IPC 353 147, 148.
Following his arrest, his supporters created ruckus on the road. The police had arrested over 100 people.
His father, well-known BJP leader and Bengal chief Kailash Vijayvargiya evaded questions from Republic Media Network on Akash's arrest. "I do not have any knowledge of this incident. I have no comment to make on this issue," he said.
