Aurangzeb Controversy: Abu Azmi Visits Police Station Amidst Political Backlash

Mumbai: In the wake of his controversial comments about Aurangzeb, Abu Azmi, an SP MLA, made a visit to the Marine Drive police station to register his statement. While speaking to media, Azmi stated that he fears the implications of being prosecuted without any wrongdoing, highlighting the challenges public figures face in Maharashtra.

He expressed respect for historical figures, asserting, “I hold great respect for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. If someone insults these great leaders, there should indeed be legal consequences.” Azmi's comments sparked outrage across the political spectrum after he labelled Aurangzeb as a "just ruler" during a media interaction at the start of the budget session.

The backlash was swift, with both ruling and opposition members condemning his statements. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured the assembly that anyone disrespecting revered figures like Shivaji Maharaj or Sambhaji Maharaj would face severe repercussions. Following this, multiple police complaints were filed against Azmi across various districts in Maharashtra.

In light of the escalating tension, the investigations were consolidated and handed over to the Marine Drive police. To protect himself legally, Azmi approached the court and obtained anticipatory bail, necessitating his regular appearances at the police station as per the court’s directives. 

Despite the scrutiny, Azmi remains resolute, stating that he wishes for a stable assembly and emphasizes the need for respectful discourse surrounding historical personalities.
