New Delhi: The government has appointed Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India ( SEBI ), succeeding Madhabi Puri Buch, whose tenure ends on Friday. According to an official government order issued on Thursday, Finance Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey will take over as the SEBI chief for a period of three years.
Who Is Tuhin Kanta Pandey?
Tuhin Kanta Pandey is a seasoned bureaucrat with extensive experience in finance, administration, and economic policy. He holds a Master’s in Economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and an MBA from the University of Birmingham, UK.
Before his appointment as SEBI Chairman, Pandey served as Finance Secretary and Secretary of the Department of Revenue under the Ministry of Finance. He has also headed three key government departments:
- Department of Investment & Public Asset Management (DIPAM)

- Department of Personnel and Training

Pandey has held several crucial positions in both the Union Government and the Odisha State Government. He has also served at the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) in its regional office.
His past roles in the Union Government include:
- Joint Secretary at the Planning Commission (now NITI Aayog)
- Joint Secretary at the Cabinet Secretariat
- Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce
In Odisha, he has served as the administrative head of multiple key departments, including Health, General Administration, Commercial Taxes, Transport, and Finance. He was also the Executive Director of Odisha State Finance Corporation and Managing Director of Odisha Small Industries Corporation.
